Open PC motion control interface for M'Ax and MultiAx servo drives

A new range of motion controllers from Nyquist Industrial Control (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) controls advanced multiple-axes using Control Techniques' SLM-based servo drives. The new CT3000 intelligent motion controller delivers the real-time, high-speed synchronization and interpolation that is required between multiple axes (see Plate 5). The controllers connect to an open PC-based platform across the industry standard high-speed IEEE-1394 FireWire network, making them fully compatible with other FireWire products and the company's NYCe product line and software tools. The CT3000 is part of the NYCe3000 family of motion controllers.

FireWire-based motion control Networking

FireWire networking technology has ignited the motion control market in virtually every machine control application domain today. The new motion controllers offer a range of characteristics and functions specifically designed for OEM motion engineers. The FireWire network allows sample-synchronous multiple-axis motion control. Real-time, deterministic communication and control between multiple motion controllers is fully supported. An open interface towards the motion control is provided for Microsoft Windows NT, NT Embedded and the Windows CE operating system.

Developed for a multi-axis environment

Designed for OEM applications, the CT3000 motion controller is compatible with Control Techniques' latest range of servo drives, M'Ax and MultiAx, which incorporate SLM. SLM was developed by Control Techniques specifically to meet high end motion applications requiring multi axes operation. They feature a fully digital connection between controller and servo amplifier, completely eliminating the classic ±10V analogue connections. Machinery manufacturers in all industries are able to benefit from unparalleled levels of axis performance with SLM. Based on a four-wire system, it also significantly reduces cabling cost and with the MultiAx series (tri-axis package), the machinery manufacturer can achieve the lowest installed system cost.

SLM is also the fast digital link between servo drive and the CT3000 motion controller. One CT3000 can control up to six axes and with FireWire network additional CT3000 units can be connected to enable more axes fully synchronised.

The CT3000 has several expansion options like embedded CPU, communication, I/O and vision. It also incorporates all the connectivity needed for high-end control. Motion-related I/O is available for all axes, including limit-switch, position latch, markers, etc. Additional encoder inputs and general purpose I/O (digital and analogue) complement the I/O features, and more I/O can be connected across the FireWire network.

There is comprehensive software support, and the NYCe3000 Software Release includes a range of single and multiple-axis commands such as splining, contouring, camming and gearing. The NYCeLauncher servo toolkit includes NYCeConfigurator, NYCeTuner and NYCeTalk modules. All software is intuitive and easy to use. An auto install CD-ROM enables OEM users to get a system up and running within 30 minutes of connection.
