4,000,000 measurement steps

Keywords: Computer numeric control, measurement

Introduced specifically to meet the needs of high specification drives – typically used in CNC machine tool and printing machines – the new range of SIN/COS sine-wave encoders from Encoder Technology is the ideal complement for brushless servo- motors.

The SIN/COS encoders are available in both hollow and solid shaft versions. They exhibit a high quality sine-wave signal with harmonic distortion better than 1%. Thanks to interpolation of the 1,024 signal periods, resolutions in excess of 4,000,000 measurement steps can be achieved. One sine/cosine signal period per revolution allows the electronic commutation of the brushless dc motors.

This highly accurate product can therefore be a major contributor to superior registration in printers and smoother machined surfaces when part of the drive system of a CNC machine tool.

A key component of the new SIN/COS models is a sine-wave opto-ASIC. This contains almost all electronics which themselves have been rationalised to provide a high degree of security against failure. Sealed to IP40 and with integral beatings, all models in the range are manufactured to ISO 9001 quality standard (Plate 2).

The encoders are designed to provide a stable and concentric connection, ensuring that the measurement system follows the highest motor angular accelerations with almost no delay. Maximum speed of the range is 12,000 rpm and positioning accuracy, +5'.
