ABB, the global technology company and leader in robot-based automation, has launched its fastest ever six-axis production robot, the IRB 140T (Turbo) (see Plate 1).

The IRB 140T builds on from the highly successful and well-established IRB 140, which already boasts as one of the fastest cycle times of any articulated arm robot and an industry-leading payload – for its size – of 5 kg.

The new IRB 140T is even faster, in fact approximately 10 per cent faster, having been timed at a mere 0.77 s to complete a defined work cycle of 25-300-25 mm (X/Y base co-ordinates). As well as its breathtaking speed of operation, ABB’s newest development incorporates all the user benefits which have made the IRB 140 such an industry favourite – allying a very compact six-axis design to a unique combination of fast acceleration, large working area and high payload.

The IRB 140T is suitable for a wide range of applications such as arc welding, machine tending, picking, materials handling and assembly and gives increased customer value through the sheer speed of its operation. The IRB 140T can be floor, wall or ceiling mounted, allowing for greater flexibility in arranging the layout of the production line and can be supplied in a wide range of configurations including a standard version, foundry version (1P67) and clean room version (Clean Room 10 standard/IP67).
