RURobots is a new, hi-tech company whose aim is to foster human and robot interaction through the creation of highly useable, intelligent machines. The new venture is expecting to operate in the defence, medical, nuclear and food marketplaces (Plate 3).

The driving force behind the new venture is Geoff Pegman, who is also its managing director. He explained: "We can provide a bridge between academia and industry by making brand new technology work in various real life scenarios. In the medical arena, robots with incredibly accurate force sensors are linked to 3D models created from the patient's CT images. With safety so imperative, such systems provide the user with constant feedback. It is expected that medical robots will eliminate inaccuracy, such as misaligned replacement joints, completely".

"With multiple military interventions around the world in any given year, countries are understandably reluctant to put too many lives at risk in their armed forces. The US Department of Defense has stated that it expects to see one third of its armoured vehicles roboticised within the next 10 years. This then is potentially a huge growth market and British technology remains at the forefront of the robotic sphere."

RURobots has taken some laboratory space at Salford University for its work with robot controllers, haptic joysticks and 3D visualisation and has entered into a formal partnership with the University. The company, whose name comes from the 1920s play where the word "robot" was first coined, is also forging links with other academic institutions and leading edge companies.
