IDM Electronics introduces the Model 286 miniature fibre optic rotary joint, a compact and lightweight device used to transfer high- speed data across rotational interfaces (Plate 5). With a body diameter of only 9.5 mm and length 14 mm, the new joint is much smaller than the traditional slip ring products and is particularly suitable for applications where size and weight are critical.

The Model 286 is a single-pass, multimode fibre optic rotary joint that provides an extremely cost effective solution for high bandwidth optical signals. It is passive and bi-directional and its robust stainless steel construction, precision bearings and high quality optic ensure exceptional performance and reliability even in the most demanding environments.

Based on fibre optic technology, the Model 286 presents a low spark hazard and has complete immunity to electromagnetic interference. These characteristics make it suitable for a wide variety of applications, especially in difficult and hazardous areas including undersea telemetry, remotely operated vehicles, radar antennas, streamers and cable reels for military and commercial use.
