This book provides practical coverage of metal cutting mechanics, CNC system design and CAD/CAM technology. Its clear and well illustrated discussion will enable readers to solve many problems encountered in manufacturing cut metal parts.

After a brief introduction, chapter 2 addresses the Mechanics of Metal Cutting and presents subjects including: the mechanics of orthogonal cutting; mechanistic modelling of cutting forces; theoretical prediction of shear angle; the mechanics of oblique cutting and drilling; the mechanics of turning and milling; analytical modelling of end milling forces; and tool wear and tool breakage.

Machine tool structures, dimensional form errors in machining; structural vibrations in machining; experimental modal analysis for multi-degree-of-freedom systems; and chatter vibrations in cutting, are amongst the subjects discussed in chapter 3, Static and Dynamic Deformations in Machining.

Chapters 4 and 5 address Technology of Manufacturing Automation, and Design and Analysis of CNC Systems, respectively. Subjects discussed include: CNC machine tool axis conventions; NC part program structure; NC part programming with CAD systems; machine tool drives; transfer function of the position loop; and real-time interpolation methods.

Intelligent machining modules; adaptive control of peak forces in milling; and an example of intelligent pocketing with the IMM system, are amongst the subjects presented in chapter 6, Sensor-Assisted Machining. The two appendices address Laplace and z-transforms, and off-line and online parameter estimation with least squares.

Overall, "Manufacturing Automation: Metal Cutting Mechanics, Machine Tool Vibrations, and CNC Design" is a well written reference text, which is suitable for practicing engineers and advanced undergraduate and graduate students.
