This book illustrates how geometric dimensioning and tolerancing methodologies can be implemented to assist in developing economically viable manufactured products. The methodologies presented are based on ASME Y14.5M and equivalent ISO standards, and can be used in developing successful product, manufacturing, and inspection designs.
After a brief introduction, chapter 2 discusses some of the techniques for product definition and concurrent engineering. It also provides an overview of Y14.5M – the language of concurrent engineering. Y14.5M concepts are further described in chapter 3, The Basis of the System.
Chapter 4, Design Layout, addresses product architecture, while the following two chapters discuss techniques for A Producible Component, and the First Steps Toward Production. Chapter 7, Dimensional Measurements, presents topics including measurement theory, statistical techniques, and measurement planning. Process planning, inspection process uncertainty, setup, and tolerance characteristics and modelling, are amongst the topics discussed in chapter 8, Inspection and Verification.
Functional Gaging, Functional Gage Tolerancing, and Functional Inspection Techniques are addressed in chapters 9‐11, while chapter 12 discusses Functional Workholding and Fixturing. The initial situation, component definition, the six‐step process, and results, are amongst the topics presented in chapter 13, Does It all Work? The final chapter of the book addresses Implementations and Process Improvement.
