Low-cost sensor stabilization platform concept to move to commercialization

Robotics Engineering Excellence, Inc. (RE2), a Carnegie Mellon Institute spin-off company, has received a contract from Kuchera Defense Systems (KDS) to commercialize a sensor stabilization platform (SSP) for small unmanned vehicles, including ground, air and sea- surface vehicles.

RE2 had developed a prototype lightweight, low-cost stabilized platform under a US$200,000 research grant from The Technology Collaborative. The new contract will enable the product to under go a design for manufacturing and assembly analysis and to be adapted for easy integration into existing unmanned systems.

The SSP developed by RE2 is a low-cost generic platform, which can stabilize a multitude of sensors through a JAUS-compliant interface. The unit can tolerate both high amplitude and high frequency vibrations as found in many unmanned vehicles. The platform is also isolated from translational shock to further protect the payload.

RE2 is located in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Other products from RE2 include the RE2 JAUS software development kit and the SHERPA unmanned ground vehicle platform. RE2 also provides a broad range of unmanned systems services, including system integration, software development, robotics engineering and semi-autonomous navigation. RE2 developments are being deployed in defence, law- enforcement and homeland security applications.

KDS is a high tech manufacturing and engineering services firm located near Pittsburgh, PA. It specializes in electronics assembly of circuit boards, unmanned robots and other military products. Robots produced by KDS are used in Iraq and Afghanistan for under vehicle inspection.

The Technology Collaborative is a South-western Pennsylvania organization with a goal of providing grants to encourage the development and commercialization of technologies in the region.
