New robotics development provides ideal manufacturing solution

Article Type: New products From: Industrial Robot: An International Journal, Volume 36, Issue 5

Siemens Industry Automation & Drive Technologies (IA & DT) is offering manufacturers a quick and efficient solution to the problem of picking and placing products from one area to another on a manufacturing site.

Siemens IA&DT has developed a number of software solutions for different types of robot formation. The latest software application is for Delta 3. Designed to pick and place light objects to a rate of 120 ppm, it is an ideal addition to manufacturing sites, particularly in the food industry.

Keith Thornhill, Business Development Manager at Siemens IA&DT discusses its uses and benefits: “The Delta 3 Kinematic has been around for a number of years and it is a very efficient and compact mechanism for moving products from one conveyor to another, for instance small food products like chicken portions, biscuits, confectionary and bread rolls can be easily moved from one conveyor and placed in a specific position in a tray or carton on an adjacent conveyor.”

“Previously, robotics technology was reserved to highly productive environments involving the use of expensive ‘black box’ robot controllers. However, the developments in electronics and data processing power now means that Kinematics like Delta 3 can be controlled with integrated vision control to give cost effective supportable automation solutions for pick and place requirements.”

“Specialised Kinematics programmed via our new software solution library, are increasingly used to solve an array of end of line product handling issues. Automated Pick & Place Kinematics are becoming more and more attractive because of the many benefits manufacturers can gain from them through increased flexibility, saving valuable floorspace and improved resource utilisation. As keeping costs low and efficiency high are at the forefront of all business objectives, our automation solution is an ideal addition to a manufacturing site as it is a totally supportable offering. As well as being easy to configure, all of the upstream and downstream functions around the pick and place requirement can be integrated into the same automation architecture, offering total cost effective flexibility.”
