The Integrated Cognitive Assistive & Domotic Companion Robotic Systems for Ability & Security (CompanionAble) is a €8 million, four-year project that began in 2008, co-funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme.

CompanionAble will provide the synergy of cost-effective Robotics and Ambient Intelligence technologies and their semantic integration to provide for a care-giver’s assistive environment. CompanionAble will be evaluated at a number of testbeds and will support the cognitive stimulation and therapy management of the care-recipient. A robotic companion (mobile facilitation) will mediate the therapy by working collaboratively with a smart home environment (stationary facilitation).

CompanionAble’s comprehensive web site details the entire project with links on its: Project Overview; Events; News and Newsletter; Public Docs which include publications and deliverables; photo Gallery; Partners, and a portal to the Companions Research Institute (CRI), a virtual research centre supporting international collaboration in inter-disciplinary research in the sub-fields of study focused on technical and societal challenges of robots acting as companions, co-workers/players with humans or with each other.

Based in Seattle, Washington, USA, Hoaloha (Hawaiian for “caring companion”) Robotics is developing software and services to support new “socially assistive” robot designs.

Hoaloha’s dynamic web site provides an introduction to this new company and its technology. The application framework, based on wireless PC technology, adds autonomous mobility, a human-centric interface design, along with the integration of innovative applications, for the assistive care market. Under the Company link is listed one of its partners, Europe’s RoboSoft.

Other tabs include information on Caregiver Facts such as the number of individuals that require assistive care and the continued rising costs; and an interesting Company Blog.
