Exercises for developing coaching capability

Ian Cunningham and Graham Dawes

The true role of the coach, the authors make clear, is to develop practical strategies and methods for assisting others in their learning in a planned and structured way. This innovative collection of exercises shows how.

These leading-edge exercises are a distillation of the team's vast experience in the field and reflect their pioneering work, using self-managed learning and neuro-linguistic programming. Together, they provide a powerful and flexible tool for all HRD professionals and facilitators to develop their coaching capability and to use as part of their programmes. The material is presented as four units.

Commentary

A comprehensive introduction to the strategies and processes of coaching providing substantial and easily adaptable material for overheads and course notes; detailed guidance on using the package and suggested training programmes.

Manual of exercises

Thirty-two skilfully structured exercises which enable participants to experience successively the roles of learner, coach and observer. In addition, every exercise includes facilitator's notes, briefing instructions and handout material. Core introductory exercises are followed by 28 exercises covering coaching strategies. These are divided into two groups which both are equally challenging for participants. Group two exercises require a familiarity with NLP on the part of the facilitator.

Document wallet

Separate forms for participants to record their observations and progress in the roles of the learner, the coach and the observer.

Facilitator's log

A record for briefing others or to be used for self-development purposes.
