Sir James Lighthill, who died recently, was regarded as one of the most distinguished scientists of the twentieth century. This set highlights his great contribution to applied mathematics, and the importance of his work.

This texts marks his place as a central figure in fluid mechanics but also in so many other areas of science and mathematics. This is a four-volume set that contains almost all his scientific papers. Each volume is divided into sections which unify his papers in a chronological order under individual themes. The research studies included are classic examples of applied mathematics research.
