Conferences and congresses

New millennium conferences Space 2000 and Robotics 2000

In February 2000, Space 2000 and Robotics 2000, the 4th International Conference on Robotics and the 7th International Conference on Engineering, Construction Operations and Business in Space, will greet the new millennium.

The purposes of both 2000 conferences are to bring together entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists, constructors, managers, executives, political leaders, educators, and students for discussions and reflection on uses of space, the Moon, Mars, and the asteroids, and robots and robotics technology in the service of human-kind. There is no doubt that developing the resources of space is one of the bright futures for human-kind.

The contributions to this double conference are peer-reviewed and feature what is called "Outreach and education" which consists of a University student competition in Robotic Lunar Construction and encouragement for high-school student papers and young astronauts. Of great importance for 2000 and thereafter are the business initiatives in space and robotics which will become essential if our endeavours in space are to be fruitful. Many of the topics to be considered at both conferences are concerned with commercial considerations now neatly termed space business.

The topics to be considered at both Space 2000 and Robotics 2000 cover a wide ranging field of interest. The former includes discussions and presentations on such intriguing studies as: robotic exploration of the Moon, Mars, Asteroids, Comets, Lunar and Mars Bases; Visions of the Future. The great debate - what next; space transportation; security. The latter conference Robotics 2000 is geared to robotics and is concerned with many topics, they include: space operations; exploration construction; robotics in national security; robotic excavation; post-disaster response; vision and virtual environments, path planning and navigation.

The double event is organised by The Aerospace Division, ASCE and is supported by NASA, USAF, and many other important organisations.

European Meeting on Cybernetics and Systems Research - EMCSR 2000

In April 2000 the Fifteenth European Meeting on Cybernetics and Systems Research will be held. EMCSR 2000 is from 25-28 April 2000, and is to be held in the University of Vienna, Austria. The meeting is organised by the Austrian Society for Cybernetic Studies (Ústerreichische Studiengesellischaft fÏr Kybernetik).

It has been arranged in cooperation with the University of Vienna Department of Medical Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence, and the International Federation for Systems Research. A preliminary programme has already been published in Kybernetes, Vol. 28 Nos 6/7 1999, further details are included in the Special Announcements section of this issue.

The Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence has asked for the following symposia, to be held during EMCSR 2000, to be noted by our readers:

  • Artificial Neural Networks and Adaptive Systems Chairpersons: H.-M. Gross, Germany, and G. Dorffner, Austria.

  • Simulation of Social Behavior and Artificial Economy Chairpersons: R. Conte, Italy, and A. Taudes, Austria.
