This book has been written for student courses and also is recommended by the publishers for self-study. It has the merit of being accompanied by an instructor's guide which is available through the web. This will certainly help those who teach discrete mathematics and also those readers who wish to follow the text without formal instruction.

This is a second edition which provides a “hands on approach” to both teaching the topic and to learning about discrete mathematics.

What is most helpful to the reader is the reference to and the guided use of the software that is “free to use” on Mac, PC and Unix. This means that using the functional language Haskell the user can experiment with mathematical notations and concepts. For teachers, it therefore offers a practical approach that provides instant feedback and allows them to monitor their students' progress. In the same way self-study readers can benefit from the planned computer interaction. The publishers say that:

No prior knowledge of functional programming is required everything the student needs is either provided or can be picked up easily as they go along.

The combination of a well-structured text and accompanying instructor's guide available via the web make it an attractive compilation for potential teacher and student.
