Our Guest Editor, Desheng Dash Wu has an enviable record of producing first rate special issues in his field and is Professor and Managing Director at RiskLab of the University of Toronto, Canada, and has close links with many other universities. He has already compiled one special issue for this journal: “Risk in Services” (Wu, 2010) which like this journal issue bridges the fields of cybernetics, systems and management sciences with an approach which is both multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary. By basing his studies on recent advances in China he adds another dimension to his text and an introduction to the approaches made there.

We are grateful to him and to his contributors who make up this compilation, and for the studied introduction to new applications and practices. We are sure that our Guest Editor and his research colleagues will achieve the discussion and forum for academic and industry researchers that is one of their primary aims.

We also include papers selected from our regular journal submissions.
