New workforce development unit opens for NHS Wales

The National Leadership and Innovation Agency for Healthcare (NLIAH) has opened a new Workforce Development, Education and Contracting (WDEC) unit.

The new unit brings together many of the functions of former Health Professions Wales (HPW) and the Welsh Assembly Government’s NHS Human Resource Division with the aim of effecting a cohesive approach to workforce development for NHS Wales.

The WDEC unit will manage a broad portfolio that will include workforce planning, the provision of information about NHS careers, standards setting and Continued Professional Development (CPD) and Lifelong Learning. Other functions previously managed by HPW, such as NHS Bursaries, have been integrated into NLIAH’s work programme. The role of the Welsh Assembly’s Finance Division has also moved under NLIAH’s management. HPW’S remaining responsibilities have moved into a wider remit for Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (www.wales.nhs.uk/sites3/news.cfm?orgid=484&contentid=4563).
