UK - The NHS Centre for Involvement

The NHS Centre for Involvement, a patient and public involvement resource centre announced by Minister for Health Rosie Winterton in May, is now approaching its formal launch. Based at the University of Warwick Science Park, the Centre is a consortium of the university, the Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS), and the Long Term Medical Conditions Alliance (LMCA). The Centre, led by Dr Jonathan Tritter, will work with NHS staff and organisations to engage with patients and the public more effectively and implement change based on their information. The Centre works closely with an array of partners, especially the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement.

The work of Centre is organised around four interdependent domains: three creative – organisational development, learning and support, research and best practice – and one to ensure effective transmission of information, communications.

The Centre will work with networks of patient and public advocates and champions from a range of organisations including the NHS, patient and public involvement forums, forum support organisations, health voluntary and community organisations (including faith-based and BME groups), statutory authorities, professional associations, local authority overview and scrutiny committees and non-executive directors and public governors.

The NHS Centre for Involvement will provide tools to turn patient and public involvement into everyday practice. These will include practical resources, models of good practice with evidence to show what works well, peer support, discussion groups and information, and advice and guidance about local learning opportunities. The Centre will also provide up to date information about Patient and Public Involvement and relevant policy issues.
