The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced €750 million in loans to European carmakers to help them design environmentally-friendly cars. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will invest €15 billion in green projects in Eastern Europe. Further loans to the car industry are also expected to be announced. The EIB has approved €5.2 billion in loans to the sector since December 2008 and has committed to provide €4 billion funding over the next four years as part of the EU’s “green cars” initiative.

The EBRD, which invests funds in ex-communist states, will invest €15 billion over the next three years in energy efficiency and renewables projects in Eastern Europe under its Sustainable Energy Initiative. The bank has invested over €2.7 billion through the initiative since it was launched in 2006.
