Sea fisheries statistics for 1997
The total quantity of sea fish (including shellfish) landed by the UK fleet (into both the UK and abroad) in 1997 was 891 thousand tonnes with a value of £622 million. There has been little change in quantity but a slight fall in value compared with 1996 when landings were 892 thousand tonnes worth £637 million. The number of UK registered vessels at the end of 1997 was 7,812 compared with 8,073 vessels at the end of 1996, a fall of 3 per cent. In 1997 18.6 thousand fishermen were employed in the UK fleet, down 2 per cent on 1996. Fresh, chilled, frozen, semi-preserved and prepared or preserved fish imported into the UK was 503 thousand tonnes, a fall of 30thousand tonnes on 1996. Exports, at 300 thousand tonnes, showed a fall of 11 thousand tonnes.
