Small populations of wild boar are living free in the countryside of southern England according to a study commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture. Evidence shows that the animals which originally escaped from their farm enclosures are breeding in the wild on the borders of Kent, East Sussex and Dorset. These findings come after reports from farmers in the areas that the free-living wild boar were causing agricultural damage. Normally wild boar are only kept under licence and the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to release wild boar or allow them to escape. Any case involving threat to human safety is a matter for the police.
