A resource book for nurses

A resource book for nurses

Shown on our front cover in this issue is Practical Nutrition in Primary Care A Resource for Nurses. It has been produced by Nestlé UK to provide professionals in primary care with an easy to use, readily accessible reference source on food and nutrition. It has been written by an independent panel of specialists in nutrition, dietetics and nursing. With greater responsibility for dietary advice being devolved to the primary care team, nurses working in the community are well placed to give nutritional advice to groups of patients and individuals with dietary problems.

Although it is intended primarily for nurses, this book has a wealth of information which is required by students and would be a useful reference book for all nutritionists. It gives the basic information about healthy eating based on The Balance of Good Health. It has some excellent advice about dietary counselling and the practical guidance section has information on a variety of conditions where nutritional shortcomings may occur. There are 22 of these different conditions ranging from pregnancy and childhood to people on low incomes and from ethnic minorities to iron deficiency, food allergy and intolerance. There are also sections on the nutritional implications of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and cancer. In each of these sections sources of additional help are suggested.

The resource section is especially helpful in giving basic information on the simple biochemistry, functions, effects of an excessive consumption and major sources of nutrients in the average diet. Common dietary fallacies are discussed and the resource ends with a glossary of terms frequently used in nutrition. There is also a comprehensive list of names and addresses from which further information may be sought. This book is highly recommended as a source of the essential information about basic nutrition.

The 130-page book in ring-bound format contains patient information sheets suitable for photocopying for distribution. Copies are available price £15 each, inclusive of postage and packing.
