Contraceptive services

A statistical bulletin on the contraceptive services provided by the NHS in England in 1997-98 was recently published by the Department of Health. In 1997 about one-quarter of women aged 16 to 49 requiring family planning services went to family planning clinics and most of the remainder went to their GPs. In 1997-98 about 1.2 million women and 80,000 men attended family planning clinics. The peak age for clinic attendance was 16 to 19 with an estimated 22 per cent of this age group attending a clinic during the year. Oral contraception was the primary method of 44 per cent of clinic attenders while the condom was the primary method of 36 per cent of attenders. Emergency contraception was prescribed by clinics on 210,000 occasions in 1997-98, an increase of 6 per cent over 1996-97.
