Keep your teeth!

The Office for National Statistics have recently published their results from the Adult Dental Health Survey - Oral Health in the UK 1998. They show that the number of people losing all their teeth dropped by nearly two-thirds over the past 20 years. The proportion of people who had lost all their natural teeth decreased from 30 per cent in 1978 to 21 per cent in 1988 and to 13 per cent in 1998. In 1998, over 83 per cent of adults had a natural dentition with approximately 21 or more of their own teeth adequate for eating a variety of foods compared with 73 per cent in 1978. The survey was based on a representative sample of adults age 16 and over living in private households in the UK. In total 6,204 adults were interviewed and 3,817 dental examinations were carried out from a sample of 3,666 responding households.
