Tandoori magazine survey 2000

Britain's favourite ethnic cuisine is Indian. There are more than 8,000 Indian restaurants in the UK and more than 70 per cent of restaurateurs intend to expand their business over the next year. They employ 56,000 people and the industry is worth £2.4 billion. Chicken Tikka Masala is the nation's favourite dish and over half the meals served contain chicken. But vegetarian dishes look likely to become increasingly popular as Indian restaurants offer such a wide and interesting variety.

A total of 99 per cent of diners are under 45 years of age and the average price to pay for a meal is £14.16 per person. Every year we eat 200 million poppadums and 21 million kilos of rice in Indian restaurants. Beer continues to be the favourite drink with 62 per cent of customers ordering it.
