Organic foods

The international market for organic foods has shown dynamic growth in recent years with increased demands of between 20 and 30 per cent being seen in many countries. Austria, Sweden and Switzerland are the most established with organic land representing 10.15 per cent, 7.47 per cent and 6.63 per cent of total agricultural land in these respective countries. Penetration of organic foods within the total food market is also highest in Scandinavia, Austria and Switzerland. A new report from the Leatherhead Food RA, The International Market for Organic Foods, looks at the trend in 21 countries including the US, 17 European markets, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

The Agri-Food Partnership's Organic Action Plan has set an ambitious target to make 10 per cent of Welsh agricultural production organic by 2005. Soil Association director Patrick Holden has claimed that Wales is home to some of our most successful organic businesses today. Organic fruit juice volume has increased by 66 per cent since 1996 although it still remains less than 1 per cent of the total market. Group Cereals Services Ltd is to sell all the grain supplied by the Organic Arable Marketing Group, estimated to be around 10,000 tonnes of combined produce during the current 2000/2001 harvest year. Organic growers joining the Group Cereals Service will benefit from the organisation's marketing experience and services as well as its expertise and growing power within the arable sector.
