Olive oil consumption

Olive oil consumption

The EU has recently launched a new consumer campaign to increase consumer knowledge of differing flavours and aromas of olive oil. Olive oil sales in 2000 were up by nearly 14 per cent on top of a ten-year sales growth of 329 per cent in the UK, from 6.8 thousand tonnes to 29.2 thousand tonnes. The EU objective is to increase this consumption and to encourage consumers to experiment further in cooking with the various types of olive oil available. The campaign will promote extra virgin, virgin and olive oil as part of the everyday and Mediterranean diet. The Olive Oil Information Bureau is being re-introduced, offering members of the public information on types and tastes of oils including recipes. The telephone number to ring is 020 7468 3642 or by e-mail infobureau@cook-oliveoil.net Tastings, workshops, recipe and information booklets along with a new Web site will be introduced to support the advertising campaign. The Web site is www.oliveoilinfo.net
