In August 2003 the Government launched a major review of the way food and catering services are purchased by central and local government, hospitals, schools and prisons.
The review is based in sustainability – taking into account the full economic, environmental, social and community impacts of the food we buy. It raises issues about waste, energy consumption, animal welfare and healthy eating. It also means providing access to contract opportunities for small and local producers, directly or through intermediaries.
The review takes forward a key element of the Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food, which builds on the findings of the Policy Commission. It is also part of the wider sustainable procurement agenda embraced by the National Strategy for Local Government.
