Burger giant McDonald's is offering customers porridge as part of a bid to revamp its breakfast menu. The firm confirmed that the traditional Scots breakfast was on offer at 22 of its stores.

The trial also features muffins, toast, cereals, yoghurt and premium coffee. A McDonald's spokeswoman said: "We are currently conducting a trial of a range of breakfast products". The move is part of a drive to offer customers healthier alternatives to burgers and fries, such as salads and fruit, the spokeswoman added.

In March, McDonald's confirmed its supersize portions, for fizzy drinks and chips, will be phased out across its UK restaurants by the end of the year.

The company, which has more than 1,250 restaurants in the UK, also announced it was planning to add more low-calorie alternatives to its menu.
