In the past twenty years, the number of notified cases of food poisoning in the UK has risen by 236 per cent. For food businesses, food safety awareness is becoming paramount in today's compensation culture. Arranging training for staff in such a high turnover sector can be a real headache for managers and is therefore a task that's easily neglected.

Esky the international training brand of Spark and Zoom Productions has developed an innovative way of training in areas of Food Safety, Fire Safety and Health & Safety. The interactive e learning courses can be carried out at a computer in the workplace via CD Rom or the internet.

In Food Safety Level One modules cover such issues as personal hygiene and cross-contamination; bacteria and toxins; delivery, storage and temperature control; cleaning fluids and pests; and legal issues. The courses can be taken at the learners' individual pace allowing them to pause and take notes throughout.

The package also provides a management evaluation area, where managers are able to access fully up-to-date statistics on individual members of staff, allowing them to look at areas of weakness and evaluate levels of competency and compliance. They are also able to demonstrate due diligence when their premises are audited.

The food safety course has been reviewed and granted a Certificate of Quality and Merit by the Royal Institute for Public Health (RIPH). At the end of the course, the students are assessed and if successful, awarded the Level One Food Safety certificate to the standards set out by the RIPH.

"Training is often perceived as boring – but we're getting fantastic feedback from all’the team members, who say this is an enjoyable and fun way to learn", said Hannah Williams, Holland House Hotel.

"We are really excited about this product, it is applicable to both small and large businesses and will make training more enjoyable and approachable for managers and staff alike whilst improving the standard of Food Hygiene across the board", stated Myles McLeod, Spark and Zoom Productions.
