Statement on vending in schools

Statement on vending in schools

The Secretary of State, Ruth Kelly has announced that the government has stopped vending machines in school's from selling high sugar fizzy drinks, chocolate and crisps from September 2006. The Automatic Vending Association (AVA) played an active part in determining the outcome.

AVA welcomes any government recommendations which would bring greater clarity to assist parents, schools and caterers as to what to provide in school. Before this schools decided for themselves on what was appropriate for their needs.

Vending operators have been sourcing new products to extend the range they offer to secondary schools. Non-branded machines are being placed in schools as required. Vending is not provided in primary schools by AVA members.

The Health Education Trust (HET) vending trials have demonstrated that vending has a clear value. AVA's Educated Choice strategy developed from dialogue with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) is a three point plan for AVA members to ensure that vending plays a positive role in providing an educated choice in food and drink vending in secondary schools.

Further action is required to teach the value of good diet, exercise and lifestyle to enable pupils to make the right choices for themselves and this is the responsibility of all those involved in their welfare.
