This issue focuses on nutrition and activity. Activity levels for many have declined over the last decades with obvious health consequences.

It has been interesting to put together a range of papers on various aspects of activity and nutrition. I have tried to include some less obvious papers on nutrition and health and activity.

You will see that this issue includes a spectrum of papers related to this topic including the relationship of exercise to cancer and fertility.

Obesity levels have been increasing along with a reduction in exercise levels. Also the associated health problems of coronary heart disease, certain types of cancers, strokes, joint problems, type 2 diabetes, social and emotional problems are all linked with obesity. One of the major factors in preventing this obesity is exercise.

Often this exercise can be integrated into daily life like walking, rather than using the car, pegging out washing rather than using a tumble dryer, washing your own car instead of using a car wash. So many of these activities burn up energy, keep people toned and also have a beneficial effect on mood and health. Unfortunately as people get heavier then exercise takes more effort and leaves them breathless and uncomfortable and thus less inclined to do more.

Also activities like walking and drying the washing outside have a good positive impact on the environment by using less energy.

There are also other papers in this issue of Nutrition & Food Science related to exercise at the elite athlete level. This is of particular interest with the Olympics coming to London.

Whatever level of exercise is examined the interaction with nutrition and health is a powerful one and I hope you enjoy the variety of papers included.

At the present time we have had a lot of rain – but thankfully no floods that have occurred elsewhere in the country – so I have been expending less energy than usual as I cannot do the usual tasks in the garden of cutting the grass.
