The School Food Trust

The School Food Trust

The School Food Trust Cook for Success Conference Programme was held during the end of May and beginning of June half term week. Events were held in Plymouth, Peterborough and the Thistle Hotel, Heathrow. They were the final ones in the series of conferences for school cooks, which aim to help improve food in schools and the nutrition of children.

The School Food Trust have produced information on the standards for school lunches and for food other than school lunches. Both of these publications are found on the School Food Trust website as well as in booklet form. Each conference consisted of:

  • A welcome from a School Food Trust Board Member.

  • Interviews with cooks who had implemented the new school lunch standards.

  • An excerpt from a video: Teachers TV programme which covered primary and secondary school case studies.

  • Table discussions: Increasing the take up of school food and "The whole school approach".

There were also demonstrations by the celebrity chefs, who are more frequently seen on the TV screen, of food which could be used at school lunch.

At break times the delegates could obtain information from a variety of stalls which included:

  • A fruit and vegetable supplier.

  • A fish producer promoting the information from the seafood industry.

  • The Food Standards Agency profiling their literature such as Better Food Better Business and their leaflet on food labels (food.gov.uk).

  • The Meat and Livestock Commission with literature on meat in the school lunches (www.mlc.org.uk).

  • McDougalls provided bread based recipes using their mixes, which can be used as a basis for snacks (www.rhmfoodservice.co.uk).

  • The School Milk project (www.schoolmilk.co.uk).

  • British cheeses (www.britishcheese.com).

  • The School Food Trust with a wealth of information (info@sft.gsi.gov.uk).

Two conferences per day were held and each was attended by at least 200 delegates.
