I love looking through charity shops and recently I bought a second-hand book called ABC of Nutrition by Stewart Truswell, who is a professor of human nutrition. It was published in 1986 and each of the chapters is based on a series of articles on human nutrition published in the British Medical Journal where I remember reading them some time ago.

The chapters include:

  • Reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

  • Diet and hypertension.

  • Nutrition for pregnancy.

  • Infant feeding.

  • Obesity.

  • Food poisoning.

  • Food sensitivity.

  • Enteral and Parenteral nutrition.

All of the topics are still relevant today in nutrition and the proportion of the population suffering from obesity, coronary heart disease and hypertension have increased. The good advice about food and types of eating patterns are still applicable.

Folate is discussed in nutrition in pregnancy as well as a sensible approach to iron intake during pregnancy. The chapter on infant feeding emphasises the need for breast-feeding and the advantages of this.

The proportion of obese individuals has increased drastically since the 6 per cent of adult men and 8 per cent of adult women in 1981, which is quoted in the chapter on obesity. There are still good principles in advice on managing obesity including the advice for regular visits and 15min long consultation with a health professional.

Despite more than 20 years having elapsed since this book was written it contains a great deal of advice and strategies for dealing with various disorders related to diet which are still relevant today.

Unfortunately the number of individuals with the various disorders has dramatically increased in most cases.
