Nutrition screening week 25-27 September 2007

Nutrition screening week 25-27 September 2007

BAPEN undertook the first prospective national nutrition screening survey in the UK across both hospital and community care settings 25-27 September 2007, in collaboration with the British Dietetic Association and the Royal College of Nursing. The initiative is also supported by the National Patient Safety Agency and now also by the Department of Health. BAPEN and its partners.

Christine Russell, the BAPEN Lead for Nutrition Screening Week said:

At the moment, we do not know the percentage of people being admitted to hospital or care homes who are at risk of malnutrition. Most of the data we currently have is over 10 years old and the studies used different criteria to define malnutrition. Screening for malnutrition risk on these three days in September and collecting data based on "MUST" will provide us with a very clear set of data and reflect what is happening in the community.Additionally, it will have provided evidence for hospitals and care homes on the scale of the problem they have to tackle in their care settings and enable them to compare their data with the national picture. It will also help demonstrate how they are striving to achieve nutritional standards and their commitment to meeting the nutritional needs of their patients and clients.
