Landfill laws

Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition

With Landfill laws changing at the end of October, businesses that produce or manage waste will soon have to review how they deal with it. The changes to the rules mean waste must be treated before it can be landfilled. If their waste does go to landfill businesses will have to check to see if it is already being treated and will have to separate recyclables and other materials. These rule changes are just the tip of the iceberg, and business should think carefully about how it deals with its waste with the price escalator on landfill tax kicking in early next year. Currently, a majority of all business waste goes to landfill or incineration meaning either an ever increasing bill, or a bad environmental reputation, or both. From a compliance angle, companies will have to take action based on the rule changes. From an "environmental best practice" angle companies should be seen to be green by disposing of their waste without the use of landfill or incineration.

The technology and solutions providers already exist to tackle these problems. One such company, Advanced Plasma Power, a waste-to-energy company currently offers the only solution for the complete transformation of waste to energy. APP's Gasplasma process generates clean, renewable energy and recycles residual waste into a unique building material. The clean synthetic gas forms the fuel for gas engines to export enough power back to, for example work places. The Gasplasma process produces virtually zero emissions and, with less than 1 per cent of feedstock input volumes being sent to landfill, it offers a much cleaner waste management solution. It can handle multiple waste streams and is targeting business and local authority partners. Web: www.carboninternational.com
