Obesity is front page news with reports of an "obesity epidemic" and 30,000 people in the UK dying prematurely every year from obesity-related conditions. As the Department of Health makes it a priority to tackle what it sees as the rising levels of obesity, there is an increasing demand for professionals to engage with the public to educate, support and, ironically, sometimes to shield them from lifestyle and weight issues. Health courses at the University of Wales, Newport are training people to deal with obesity and a range of other health-related problems. By examining a range of issues surrounding obesity management, including alternative, innovative treatments and interventions, students on the BSc (Hons) Lifespan Exercise and Health degree course will be given the opportunity to complete professional qualifications, aiding employability and allowing them to gain membership of recognised professional organisations.

For those interested in a more flexible, "hands-on" approach to study there is the option of a Foundation Degree in Community Health & Community Social Care. This degree, which is also suitable for day release students, examines a range of health issues including how nutrition affects our health, common health problems and their treatment, why some people are prone to disease, the environmental factors that affect our health and how psychology can help improve health.
