It is always good to be able to put together a range of papers for Nutrition & Food Science. This issue has a large range of papers from all over the world on a variety of topics:

  • With an increased interest in different types of breads, a paper on fermented bread from India is of interest.

  • Calcium and vitamin D are of great importance to bone health and unfortunately many individuals do not take enough calcium or vitamin D due to not exposing their skin to the sun or for dietary reasons. Consequently problems with bone pain can develop.

  • With an increasing variety of foods a paper on the chemical composition of green gram from India will be of assistance.

  • POPs in breast milk and infants’ health and POPs in breast milk and the relationship with women’s breast cancer from India covers information on persistent organic pollutants found in breast milk and any risks to both infants and mothers

  • Iodine is a trace element important to the functioning of the thyroid gland. It has recently been examined by the FSA and a paper on the iodine content of water and foodstuffs is very topical.

  • With many people travelling by air, the paper on the nutritive value of airline meals is valuable to the consideration of the overall diet of individuals who travel frequently.

  • Pineapple is a popular fruit often bought inexpensively at markets in England and more information on the vitamin C content of it can be helpful.

  • Lead acts as a toxin and the levels of green leafy vegetables may contribute to lead intake when grown in certain areas, which may be contaminated.

  • There has been increasing interest in omega 3 fatty acids over the last decade and this paper brings information on the latest evidence on omega 3 fatty acids and health.

  • Kid meat is popular in many parts of the world and a study on performance of goats fed sulphur additive will be of help to producers.

  • In a time when talk of recession and downturns in businesses leads to feelings of gloom I felt impelled to look at the subject of food and happiness to try and summarise any factors regarding food and diet that may help to lift spirits.
