Ten years of the FSA
Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 40, Issue 4.
As the Food Standards Agency (FSA) celebrated its 10th anniversary, Which? looked at its first decade and commented on the following points.
Safety
Strides have been made in tackling food hygiene, but more efforts are still needed to tackle the main types of food poisoning bacteria. Food contamination incidents have been better handled, but the FSA needs to better anticipate threats from possible contaminants along the supply chain.
Healthier eating
The FSA has worked with stakeholders to develop a nutrition labelling scheme and to ensure more healthy products are offered and promoted. Going forward, the FSA must build on these successes by ensuring wider adoption of its recommended nutrition schemes, and by taking action on portion sizes and the quality of food in public institutions.
Consumer choice
The FSA has made progress on clearer labels and food fraud, but more work still needs to be done on improving country of origin labelling and making clear when water and other bulking agents are added to foods.
