Australian weight loss programme

Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 40, Issue 6.

More than half of people in the UK are obese or overweight. However 90 per cent of those who worry about putting on weight said that their GP provided only the standard advice of eating less and exercising more. Professor Andrew Prentice, Director of the Medical Research Council's International Nutrition Group and an expert on obesity, is concerned that the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in the last 25 years, in the UK and the figure is still rising. Overweight people are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Ideally a man's waist measurement should be under 37 inches and a woman's under 32 inches. The average woman will attempt 15 diets in her lifetime and these usually fail when willpower falters. A monotonous and restrictive dieting regime is often blamed. A total of 600,000 Australians have joined the Tony Ferguson Weight Loss Programme, developed down under by pharmacists Tony and Chris Ferguson. This weight loss programme became available from larger chemists in the UK earlier this month.

Dieters are given two nutritionally balanced meal replacements, with a mixture of vitamins, minerals and fibre, a healthy eating plan and one healthy meal every day. The programme uses low glycemic index foods and protein combinations. Participants are required to consult a diet counsellor, who can draw up an individual programme for their weight loss and health. They are then supported by 24h freephone access to advice on all aspects of weight loss from trained nutritionists.
