Feeding for Life Foundation
Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 42, Issue 2
The Feeding for Life Foundation launched at the Annual CPHVA Conference with a seminar to discuss their new report: MIND THE GAP: are the current vitamin recommendations meeting the needs of the under-5s in the UK?:
- •
Vitamin supplementation recommendations exist but the majority of healthcare professionals and parents are either unsure or unaware of them.
- •
These recommendations are out of sync with the real nutrient needs of UK’s under-5s – new data shows that only Vitamin D is needed.
- •
Current supplementation strategies such as the Healthy Start scheme are proving to be ineffective.
- •
The report raises these important questions about the implications of ineffective supplementation, to encourage discussion and concerted action towards a pragmatic solution. It suggests that no single strategy can address this nutrient gap, and consideration should be given to various approaches to enhancing vitamin D intake.
