In the latest issue of dietetics today, a new article by MAP members Roger Leicester and Dr Carrie Ruxton outlines the current evidence for the treatment and prevention of the disease and lists their top 10 tips for reducing bowel cancer risk. Mr Leicester and Dr Ruxton, commented: “Studies examining foods or nutrients that may decrease risk are mostly observational. This produces a frustrating lack of consistency in findings due to interference from dietary and lifestyle confounders”.

A Swedish review study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, reported associations between high intakes of bacon and an increased risk of having pancreatic cancer. Commenting on the study, Dr Carrie Ruxton, a dietetic member of MAP, said: “I am always cautious about drawing conclusions from these types of studies because they do not properly control for other factors that influence the cancer risk.” (Larsson and Wolk, 2012).
