The well‐regarded and concise Know How Guides from Aslib have added to their reputation with this excellent comprehensive and lucid guide to that bane of many practitioners lives – the job description. Mary Casteleyn’s long experience in personnel and training is distilled into this useful little volume and should prove of considerable value and relevance to all LIS practitioners, particularly those who deal in any way with “human resources”. There are lots of good, practical details, such as who drafts job descriptions? What is the legal position?, Style and content of job descriptions and an interesting section entitled “What does a librarian do?”. There are some varied and appropriate examples given, carefully chosen from a wide range of academic, health, special and public libraries which serve to inform and illuminate the text. There is a good concise Reading List and a list of useful organisations and addresses serves to round off this handy and informative guide for LIS practitioners.
