To quote from this excellent collection, Isaac Bashevis Singer says: “The whole world, all human life, is one long story”, and librarians should perhaps pay more attention to the delights and importance of storytelling in their libraries. Clearly aimed at school and public libraries this bright and readable collection covers many aspects of storytelling for librarians, even exploring storytelling in cyberspace (very American, that!).

Papers by eminent storytellers, library educators and practitioners fill this Storytelling Conference’s output. The book covers such fascinating areas as narrative in picture books, stories for diverse audiences and the cycle of children’s writing, legends and fairy tales. Good bibliographies and a clear index all help to make this a stimulating and absorbing read for all librarians and students interested in developing reading and the imagination – not just children’s reading but adults as well. “The story endures and adapts and grows and flourishes. Stories survive”.
