Editorial

Library and information science (LIS) education is a hot topic on an international basis. European Curriculum Reflections on Library and Information Science Education (Kajberg and Lorring, 2005) is the preliminary conclusion of a project sponsored by the EU’s SOCRATES programme. It is inspired by discussions covering a very broad spectrum of views, perspectives and backgrounds from many different European LIS educational environments and many different European library systems. It considers the apparent disparate nature of LIS educational programmes in Europe, which constitutes a barrier to increased co-operation in the field.

However, the debate extends internationally beyond Europe, and I am delighted that this issue of New Library World is themed on international library education. It draws on the Forum on International Library Education held at the ALA 2006 Conference by the then President, Michael Gorman. I am also delighted to replace my usual editorial discussion by an Introduction from Michael Gorman.
