E-collection of dissertations at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich

In late 2001 the ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) Zurich Library launched its E-collection project as part of the strategic ETH World Programme. The goal of this project is to provide an alternative publication platform for staff and students of the ETH outside the traditional publishing industry. By setting up a document server for the university, the ETH Library intends to record centrally and store on a long-term basis, according to international standards, all "grey" literature from its institutes. Durable and citable URLs are given for each item included in the collection.

The Web site, which is held in German and English, is organised according to document type, authors, subject areas and departments. All documents may be searched via the Web site of the E-collection or in the NEBIS (Network of Libraries and Information Centres in Switzerland) library catalogue. The retrieved documents may be downloaded as PDF files. There are many ways to introduce electronic documents into the E-collection: by sending a CD-ROM or disc, by an attached file in an e-mail, by sending a URL or by loading the file on the E-collection upload-server. Recently an intranet has been installed in order to meet the wish of some authors to restrict the access to their documents to ETH internal users only. To ensure a satisfying service the browsing lists are uploaded daily.

The collection presently (December 2002) comprises over 3,300 full-text documents (including nearly 2,000 dissertations). The main subject focus of the collection is science and technology in accordance with the profile of the ETH Zurich. The following steps will be to integrate multimedia objects and to exchange metadata with other document servers and archives abroad (e.g. Open Archive Initiative).
