The main benefit claimed of the new water-based microsphere inks from Videojet is their suitability for mixing. The formulation of these 16-2900 Series inks allows them to be safely combined in any proportion so that variations on the standard colours purple, yellow, grey and pink can be easily achieved (Plate 3). These inks have been introduced to provide customers with an alternative to microsphere ink which is now widely used to print an opaque code on both dark- and light-coloured substrates.

The code is similar to that provided by pigmented ink but Videojet's microsphere inks do not require stirring and therefore do not need to be used with a dedicated pigmented printer. The new colours are stated to be fully compatible with the existing l 6-2960 white ink and all share the same make-up and cleaning solutions. Their dry time ranges from 5-18 seconds dependent on the substrate but this can be accelerated to as little as two seconds with air assistance.

Ideal for printing onto coloured substrates, the new inks are methanol and MEK-free and provide good adhesion to a number of substrates including glass, metal, plastic, robber and paperboard. Some of the many applications currently being served by the white microsphere ink include printing onto automotive parts, videotapes, stainless steel pipes, insulating material, cables, clear and amber glass/plastic containers.
