Paint and powder coaters cooperate

Keywords: Paint and Powder Finishing Association, Paints, Powder coatings

Cooperation has also been the watchword in the UK at a recent “Workshop for trade coaters” organised by the newly formed Paint and Powder Finishing Association (PPFA). The workshop included a number of key subjects devoted to the views of trade coaters, with a general discussion giving some insight into how the PPFA might support members.

Three important areas were highlighted:

  1. 1.

    communications;

  2. 2.

    promotion; and

  3. 3.

    training.

Keeping busy coaters up to date with standards, legislation and other information was seen as a vital function of the PPFA, as was the need for some sort of scheme for evaluating skill levels and, possibly, the introduction of a recognised standard such as an industry-accepted NVQ.

Delegates felt that coaters were often viewed with some scepticism and the PPFA should consider methods to enhance the reputation of members, including the launch of a “seal of approval”.

The PPFA has recently received part-funding from the DTI for a benchmarking mission to the USA this autumn. Open to industrialists with particular interests in paints and powder coatings, the mission will focus on investigating differences between the industrial finishing scene in the USA and similar activities in the UK.
