Keywords: The Institute of Metal Finishing, Training, Surface coatings

With the introduction by the Institute of two additional modules to their range of distance learning courses, technicians specialising in organic surface coating are now able to pursue focused courses in powder coating applications and in the application of paints, lacquers and varnishes.

Each module requires approximately 30 hours of study, normally completed over 15 weeks, and uses audio cassettes with back-up notes and drawings. Course study is supported by self-assessment questions, a series of marked continual assessment questions and two practical exercises, with a course tutor on hand to provide any help or assistance.

The course includes: an introduction to types of powder and to compositions of paints, cleaning and pre-treatment, methods of application, testing of applied coatings, problem solving and health, safety and environment.

The modules can be linked with other modules in the Institute’s Distance Learning series for the award of a Technician’s Certificate, or may be studied separately. On completion of a module and the successful passing of a short examination, a Module Certificate is awarded.

The modules have been produced by Mike Cowley (author) and Ron Read (editor) in association with Brian Perry (Distance Learning tutor).
