The Scirocco Dry Powder Feeder for the Malvern Instruments Mastersizer 2000 laser diffraction-based particle size analyser is stated to be designed to ensure reliable, reproducible and safe particle size measurement of dry materials (Plate 1). Its enclosed air cell is said to eliminate the problems of velocity bias that may be encountered with other systems and which leads to the overestimation of fine particles in a sample. It also claims to provide protection for the operator, an important consideration when measuring hazardous substances.

Particle size measurement using the Mastersizer 2000 is driven by the straightforward establishment and implementation of operating macros in the software known as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). As a result, operator variability is reportedly minimised to ensure consistent, reproducible results wherever the measurement is made and by whichever user.

In keeping with the principles of the Mastersizer 2000, the Scirocco Dry Powder Feeder is stated to be highly controllable and its functions can be closely specified within SOPs. Feed rate and air pressure are monitored, controlled and traced from the software, and vacuum monitoring is believed to ensure repeatability of results.

Results can be e-mailed from one user to another and an SOP extraction facility in the software allows the recipient to use the same operating procedure that created the result as well as reviewing the operating conditions which were used to obtain the measurement.
