BRE reports that it is to undertake a new project to improve the performance of paints and other coatings used in the construction industry. The project has been called PAINT 2005 – Protective And Innovative New Treatments. BRE believes that this initiative is unique in the UK.

The aim of PAINT 2005 is to develop new forms of product by 2005. In order to achieve this, PAINT 2005 will seek input from manufacturers and suppliers to industry and major customers, including housing associations, developers and local authorities.

PAINT 2005 has come about as a result of the estimated £1 billion a year wasted by building owners on incorrectly specifying coatings and paint products. Therefore, input from those who specify and purchase these items will be sought on a range of issues, including expected lifetimes for the products, budget factors and fire-resistance needs. This information will then be used to develop product profiles and generic specifications for most types of building.

The paint and coating manufacturers are then able to use the product profiles as a basis for product development to match demand and meet customer needs. Furthermore, in a market that includes an increasing number of products that do not need painting, such as composites, it provides a mechanism for manufacturers to be genuinely responsive to customer needs and so maintain their place in the market.

As a further service to customers of the paint and coatings industry, BRE will be working to ensure that manufacturers who use the BRE product profiles adhere to specifications. This it believes will provide assurance that products sold with a BRE product profile can be trusted.
